What makes a receipt claim-ready?
Read the current Guide: The Dossier Way
“Captured” is Dossier's word for a receipt that carries what the CRA looks for to support a claim. It's a documentation standard, not a verdict on eligibility — and it's surprisingly easy to fail.
The five fields almost every claim needs
- Who you paid — the vendor, provider, or organization
- When — the date of the expense
- How much — the amount, with sales tax where charged
- What for — a description of the goods or service
- Who it was for — the patient, the child, the household — when the line cares
Then each line adds its own demands
A donation needs an official receipt with the charity's registration number and specific wording. A child care receipt from an individual needs their SIN. A medical receipt should name the patient. A generic card-terminal slip — amount, date, nothing else — supports almost nothing.
The habits that keep you claim-ready
Ask for the detailed receipt, not the terminal slip. Capture it the day you get it, while a correction is still possible. And when a receipt is missing something, go back to the vendor now — a pharmacy can reprint an official receipt in April; a moving company from last summer may not.
Dossier automates the check: it reads each receipt on your device, compares it against the rules for its tax line, and stamps it Captured or flags Needs attention with the specific gap.
Not tax advice. This guide covers documentation, not eligibility. Whether an expense is claimable depends on your situation — confirm on canada.ca or with a qualified professional.
